The mid-size Chevrolet introduced as the 1964 Malibu was an instant hit. The integration of the big block 396 into Super Sport package in 1966 created a market sensation. The combination of excellent ride and handling due to the four-wheel coil spring suspension, five passenger capabilities, and big block performance created one of the most popular and iconic muscle cars of all time. To 1960’s and early 1970’s buyers the Chevelle, particularly when equipped with the SS package, had all the right stuff.
Although known as the Chevelle SS-396, the venerable big block was actually slightly bored out for 1970 giving 402 cubic inches. This has created long standing confusion as to what is actually correct. The car is correctly known as the "Chevelle SS-396" although it is technically equipped with a 402 cubic inch engine.
The earlier Chevelles were very popular, but many think the Chevy got everything just right with the restyled 1970 model. Although more angular than the earlier cars, the ‘70s seem more pleasing to the eye. When the SS package with stripes and cowl induction hood were added the result was stunning good looks. No collection of muscle cars can be considered complete without a 1970 Chevelle Super Sport. These cars are easy to drive with awesome performance and ample room for even the largest drivers. The interior is well appointed with comfortable "strato-bucket seats," center console with floor shifter, and factory gauge package. Performance is brisk with plenty of the legendary big block torque available at all times.
Factory air-conditioning, power steering, and brakes contribute to driver fun and comfort. One short drive and the lasting popularity of these cars are easily understood. Watching the cowl induction hood open when the accelerator is depressed is a treat not to be missed. Not only is there room for five occupants, but the trunk has ample room for golf clubs or your cruise night accoutrements.
This example is an older high quality, frame-off restoration. The red with black strips exterior and black interior is one of the most loved color combinations. The paint is in excellent condition and is suitable for the show circuit of your favorite cruise night. Inte |
